Sablé-Solesmes
September 29th - October 1st, 2006
At one stage, those Section Golf Weekend addicts could hardly be
blamed for thinking we would be served a repeat performance of the lashing rain
that marred our first outing there. However, it was only the hardy who ventured
out for some more golf on Saturday afternoon instead of enjoying the pleasures
of 5 o'clock Vespers in the abbey that were seriously doused during a
particularly violent thunderstorm.
The three 9-hole courses proved to be in generally good
condition in spite of some damp patches and the Forêt and Rivière courses, venue
for the Kiwi Cup, proved their worth as we did battle on Saturday morning.
The staff at both the clubhouse and hotel were charming and went
out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. The two evening meals were
delicious and were served nice and quickly, once we finally took the few steps
from the bar to the restaurant.
Nobody managed to quite play their handicap; generally speaking,
the lower handicappers coped better with the enormous length and technical
difficulties of the courses and were rewarded with the top spots.

A big vote of thanks to chief organizer, Eric Lacey, who as well
as controlling the weather, had to juggle with the usual various last minute
changes to plans.
