The Abbey at Solesmes
"Prayers for Putters"
held daily

Sablé-Solesmes
21st - 23rd September, 2012

Dean Trophy (best gross): Ian Jones
Kiwi Cup (best net): Penny Tagher
Wettest Player: Andrew Dean

We arrived at Sablé-Solesmes on Friday lunchtime to a sudden deterioration of the weather – 12° C and steady rain…

Most of us did play 9 holes in the afternoon, one or two played a few more. Only Andrew Dean was undeterred and played the whole 18 holes on the Forêt-Rivière course (“I was so wet after 9 holes that I thought I couldn’t get any wetter”). Thankfully the weather improved for the Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday we played for the Kiwi Cup and Dean Trophy on the very challenging, and long, Forêt-Rivière course. Ian Jones won the Dean Trophy for the best gross stableford score. Penny Tagher won the Kiwi Cup.

Leading net stableford scores, and prize-winners, were:

Penny Tagher 34
Muriel Jones 33
Marie-France Murphy   31
Ian Jones 30
Simon Murphy 29
Douglas Anderson 26*

 (*on a count-back)

On Sunday we played a scramble à la française on the Rivière-Cascade course. There were three teams of three and two of four players.

Ian Jones, Penny Tagher, Chris Fewkes and Marie-France Murphy came first with 42 points
Sue Hall, Simon Murphy, Fraser Anderson and Pat Cully were second with 40 points
Roland Bouloux, Muriel Jones and Jean-Pierre Delage were third with 38 points.

In general, everyone was pleased with the weekend – the Grand Hôtel de Solesmes was very comfortable, despite occasional bell-ringing from the abbey, and the food was excellent. The courses are challenging but very interesting. So a place to go back to in the future I think.
